Magento 1 to Shopify Plus Migration

Overview

A fast-growing electronics distributor based in the Netherlands relied on Magento 1 to power its ecommerce operations. As the platform approached end-of-life, the company faced increasing security risks, rising maintenance costs, and limitations that made it difficult to scale its ecommerce business.

The company supplies consumer electronics and smart home products through both B2B wholesale and direct-to-consumer ecommerce channels, serving partners and customers across the Netherlands and Belgium. Operating across multiple markets required a platform capable of supporting different tax regulations, scalable product catalogs, and reliable performance during peak traffic periods.

To modernize their ecommerce infrastructure, the company partnered with Elogic Commerce. Our goal was to migrate the existing Magento 1 platform to Shopify Plus, simplify ecommerce operations, and build a scalable solution capable of supporting both B2B and B2C commerce across multiple markets.

Results

Following the migration to Shopify Plus, the client achieved significant improvements in both performance and operational efficiency:

  • 40% reduction in total cost of ownership

  • 25% increase in conversion rate

  • 15% growth in average order value

  • Zero downtime during peak traffic

  • Two markets managed from one Shopify Plus admin

Challenges

Before the migration, the client faced several technical and operational challenges.
First, the Magento 1 end-of-life deadline required an urgent transition to a supported and secure ecommerce platform.

Second, managing both B2B and B2C operations created additional complexity. The existing platform required significant custom development to support wholesale pricing, partner accounts, and consumer sales within the same ecosystem.

Operating across the Netherlands and Belgium also required flexible VAT handling for cross-border transactions, which demanded customized checkout logic.

Finally, the client wanted to reduce infrastructure costs while building a platform capable of supporting long-term ecommerce growth.

Our solution

We implemented a Shopify Plus–based commerce architecture designed to support both B2B and B2C operations from a single platform. Shopify Plus became the core ecommerce engine powering both sales channels, while integrating with the client’s ERP and operational systems to ensure consistent product data, pricing, and inventory across the ecosystem.

The solution included:

  • Shopify Plus as the central ecommerce platform

  • Contentful for flexible content management

  • Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central as the ERP system

  • Celigo as the integration platform

  • Shipping integrations with regional logistics providers

To support the client’s international operations, our team implemented custom checkout logic for EU VAT handling, ensuring compliance with regional tax regulations.

We also implemented cross-sell functionality and product recommendation features to improve product discovery and increase average order value.

Implementation

The project began with a discovery and architecture phase, during which we analyzed the client’s Magento infrastructure and defined the target Shopify Plus architecture.

The development and migration phase lasted approximately four months and included platform implementation, data migration, ERP integration, and feature development.

We executed the launch through a carefully planned rollout, ensuring zero downtime and uninterrupted ecommerce operations.

Business impact

Migrating to Shopify Plus significantly improved both the technical foundation and business performance of the client’s ecommerce operations.

The company now manages both B2B and B2C sales across the Netherlands and Belgium from a single Shopify Plus backend, simplifying daily operations and reducing internal complexity.

Lower infrastructure costs, improved site performance, and enhanced merchandising capabilities contributed to higher conversion rates and increased average order value.

The new platform also provides a scalable foundation for future ecommerce growth.
