What is Conversational Commerce?

Conversational commerce is the use of chat, messaging, voice, or AI assistants to help customers discover products, ask questions, receive recommendations, and complete commerce tasks through conversation. The customer usually remains in control of the final decision and transaction.
The interface may be a website chat, messaging app, voice assistant, or AI search experience. Instead of navigating category trees and forms, the customer states an intent in natural language and refines the request through dialogue. The conversation can support product discovery, questions, recommendations, service, and in some cases checkout or reorder flows.
A conversational commerce experience may combine:
• Natural-language understanding for questions, preferences, and product requirements.
• Search and product APIs that return current, structured catalog data.
• Customer and order context for personalized service after authentication.
• Escalation to a human agent when the request is ambiguous, sensitive, or outside automation rules.
Conversational commerce is broader than agentic commerce. A conversation can remain purely advisory, while an agentic experience is able to execute approved actions. The strongest implementations make that boundary visible: the AI can explain and recommend freely, but actions that affect orders, payments, account data, or returns should use deterministic tools and explicit authorization.
Example: A buyer can describe a use case in chat, refine requirements through follow-up questions, compare products, and then move into cart or quote creation without navigating the catalog manually.
