AI Share of Voice Explained

AI share of voice measures how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with relevant competitors across a defined set of prompts or topics. It is used to track visibility in generative search and answer engines over time.

The metric adapts the familiar marketing concept of share of voice to AI-generated answers. Instead of counting ad impressions or organic rankings, it measures how often a brand is cited, mentioned, recommended, or surfaced relative to a defined competitor set across repeated prompts. The denominator and scoring method must be defined clearly because there is no single industry-standard formula.

A useful AI share-of-voice framework specifies:

• A fixed query set grouped by informational, comparison, transactional, and brand-intent topics.

• Which engines, models, countries, and logged-in or anonymous contexts are being tested.

• How citations, unlinked mentions, ranked recommendations, and product appearances are weighted.

• The sampling frequency, because generated answers can vary between runs and change over time.

For ecommerce and B2B companies, the metric is most valuable as a trend and competitive benchmark. It can show that a brand is becoming more visible around “B2B ecommerce replatforming” or “Shopify Plus ERP integration,” even before large referral volumes appear. Because AI outputs are probabilistic, teams should avoid treating one generated answer as market share and instead aggregate repeated observations.

Example: If a brand appears in 35 of 100 repeated prompts while its closest competitor appears in 55, the comparison is more informative than a single prompt where either company happens to be mentioned.
