What is AI-Referred Traffic?

AI-referred traffic is website traffic that arrives from links or referrals inside AI assistants, answer engines, and generative search experiences. Tracking it helps teams understand which AI platforms and cited content generate measurable site visits.
This traffic can come from an explicit citation link, a product result, or another clickable element in an AI-generated experience. It is different from AI visibility itself because many mentions and answers do not produce a click. A company can therefore gain brand exposure or influence a buying decision without seeing a proportional increase in sessions.
When analyzing AI-referred traffic, teams should track:
• Referral source and landing page, including whether analytics tools classify the source correctly.
• Engagement, conversion, assisted conversion, and revenue rather than raw sessions alone.
• Which cited content types attract visits — research, guides, comparisons, products, or service pages.
• Changes in branded search or direct traffic that may follow AI exposure but are not attributed as referrals.
The volume is often smaller than organic search traffic, but intent can be high because users may arrive after an AI system has already summarized and compared options. For GEO reporting, referral traffic should therefore sit alongside citation, mention, share-of-voice, and product-visibility metrics rather than serve as the only measure of success.
Example: A visitor who clicks a cited implementation guide from an AI answer may arrive with more context and stronger intent than a generic informational visitor, so conversion and assisted impact matter more than session count alone.
