What is cXML?

cXML, or Commerce XML, is an XML-based standard used to exchange procurement and commerce documents between buying organizations, suppliers, ecommerce systems, and procurement platforms. It is widely associated with PunchOut procurement, where a buyer enters a supplier catalog from systems such as SAP Ariba or Coupa and returns selected items to the procurement application.
cXML covers more than catalog access. Depending on the integration, it can carry setup requests, PunchOut session data, shopping-cart messages, purchase orders, order confirmations, shipping notices, and invoices. The exact document flow depends on the procurement platform and the commercial process agreed between buyer and supplier.
A cXML ecommerce integration needs to handle:
• Authentication and buyer identity when the procurement platform starts a PunchOut session.
• Product, quantity, pricing, and contract context passed between the portal and buyer system.
• Purchase-order documents and acknowledgements after the requisition is approved.
• Validation, error messages, logging, and version compatibility across both organizations.
For B2B suppliers, cXML can eliminate manual order entry and connect ecommerce directly to the customer’s procurement process. The complexity lies in mapping each buyer’s data and rules to the supplier’s ERP and commerce systems. A technically valid cXML message is not enough if units, identifiers, pricing, or ship-to data do not match the systems of record.
Example: A buyer launches a supplier catalog from Coupa, fills a cart on the supplier site, and returns the cart to Coupa through cXML so the company’s normal requisition and approval process can continue.
