Solution architecture is the design of a specific technology solution across applications, integrations, data flows, infrastructure, security, and operational requirements. In ecommerce, it translates business needs into a buildable system design and implementation roadmap.
A solution architect turns business requirements into a concrete technical design for a project or program. In ecommerce, that means deciding how the chosen platform, frontend, integrations, data flows, security model, and operational services will work together to deliver a specific outcome. The role sits between business analysis and implementation.
A solution-architecture deliverable may define:
• System context, component boundaries, data ownership, and integration interfaces.
• Key workflows such as pricing, checkout, order creation, returns, B2B approvals, or procurement.
• Non-functional requirements for performance, security, scalability, availability, and compliance.
• Technology choices, trade-offs, risks, migration approach, and implementation sequence.
The value is not producing diagrams for their own sake. A good solution architecture reduces ambiguity before development begins and makes trade-offs explicit. It also creates a reference for engineering teams, vendors, and stakeholders to evaluate whether later changes still fit the intended operating model.
Example: For a new B2B portal, the solution architect can document how company accounts, SAP pricing, Akeneo product data, checkout, approvals, and order events interact before developers start implementation.
