What is Assisted Selling?

Assisted selling is a commerce model where a sales representative, service agent, or digital assistant helps a customer choose products and complete a purchase. In B2B, it often combines self-service portals with human support for complex products, quotes, or exceptions.
The assistance may happen in person, by phone, through chat, or inside a digital portal. The seller helps the buyer interpret requirements, select compatible products, configure a solution, build a quote, or complete a complex order. Digital assisted selling gives the representative access to the same live product, account, and order context that the customer uses online.
Assisted-selling tools can support:
• Guided product selection and compatibility checks for complex catalogs.
• Shared carts, saved quotes, or sessions that can move between rep and buyer.
• Customer-specific pricing, history, recommendations, and contract context.
• Handoff from AI or self-service to a human when the transaction needs judgment.
Assisted selling is particularly relevant in B2B because not every transaction should be forced into pure self-service. The goal is to reduce friction while preserving expertise. A mature commerce model allows buyers to complete routine purchases independently and brings a rep into the journey only where configuration, negotiation, or exception handling adds real value.
Example: A technical sales rep can help a customer configure compatible components in a shared cart, then hand the completed configuration back to the buyer for internal approval and checkout.
