What is B2B Buying Agent?

A B2B buying agent is an AI agent that supports or automates business purchasing tasks such as supplier discovery, product comparison, RFQs, approvals, and order placement. It must operate within company-specific contracts, budgets, permissions, and procurement rules.
The B2B version is more constrained than a consumer shopping agent because the “best” purchase depends on organizational rules, not only product preference. A buying agent may need to check an approved supplier list, contract pricing, minimum quantities, delivery locations, payment terms, budget limits, and whether the purchase requires approval before it can proceed.
A B2B buying agent may participate in:
• Supplier and product discovery against technical specifications or approved catalogs.
• RFQ creation, comparison of supplier responses, and preparation of a recommended quote.
• Purchase requisitions and approval workflows based on role, department, or spending threshold.
• Reorders and purchase-order creation using negotiated prices, terms, and delivery rules.
This makes ERP and procurement integration critical. If the agent cannot see the buyer’s real contract terms, available credit, inventory, or approval status, it cannot safely automate the workflow. The goal is not to let a model improvise purchasing policy; it is to let the agent navigate well-defined B2B rules faster while leaving financial authority and exceptions under explicit control.
Example: A procurement agent can compare approved replacement parts, prepare an RFQ, and route the preferred option for manager approval, but it should not bypass the company’s spend limit or supplier policy.
