CPQ (Configure, Price, Quote): What It Is & How It Works

CPQ (Configure, Price, Quote) is software that helps businesses configure complex or customizable products, calculate the correct price for each configuration, and generate an accurate quote — quickly and without errors. It’s most valuable in B2B sales, where products have many options, pricing follows negotiated rules, and a wrong quote can cost a deal or a margin.

The name maps to its three stages:

  • Configure — the buyer or rep selects options, and the system enforces valid combinations (compatible parts, required add-ons, no impossible builds)
  • Price — it applies the right pricing automatically: contract rates, volume discounts, customer-specific terms, and margin rules
  • Quote — it produces a professional, accurate quote document, often routed through approval before it reaches the buyer

CPQ exists because manual quoting breaks down at scale. When products have hundreds of variants and pricing depends on the customer, the volume, and active contracts, sales reps make mistakes in spreadsheets — quoting invalid configurations, applying the wrong discount, or taking days to turn a request around. CPQ replaces that with rules the system enforces, so quotes come out fast, valid, and consistent.

In ecommerce, CPQ powers self-service for configurable B2B products: a buyer can build their own configuration, see accurate pricing, and request a quote online without a rep. It typically sits on top of the platform’s B2B quoting features and draws pricing in real time from the ERP — which is why complex, CPQ-style quoting is one of the common points where businesses outgrow native B2B functionality and need custom development.
