First-party Data Explained

First-party data is information a business collects directly from its own customers and audience, through its own channels — purchases, account activity, website behavior, email sign-ups, surveys, and support interactions. Because it comes straight from the source with the customer’s relationship and consent, it’s the most accurate, reliable, and privacy-safe category of data a business owns.

It’s usually contrasted with the other data types by source: third-party data is bought from outside aggregators who collected it elsewhere, and second-party is another company’s own data shared or sold directly. First-party is the most valuable of the three — it’s specific to your actual customers, you control how it’s collected, and it doesn’t depend on outside sources whose accuracy and legality you can’t verify.

Common examples of this data in ecommerce include:

  • Transactional — order history, average order value, purchase frequency, returns
  • Behavioral — pages viewed, products browsed, cart activity, on-site search queries
  • Declared — account details, preferences, survey responses, newsletter sign-ups
  • Engagement — email opens and clicks, support tickets, loyalty-program activity

Its importance has grown sharply for two reasons:

  • Privacy shifts — third-party cookies and cross-site tracking are being phased out, pushing businesses toward server-side tracking and away from bought audience data
  • Regulation — laws like GDPR and CCPA tighten how personal data can be collected and used, making consented first-party data the safer foundation

In ecommerce, this data drives personalization, segmentation, retention, and smarter merchandising — a store knows what its customers actually bought and browsed, and can act on it directly. It also has a specific value in content and SEO: original first-party data — real benchmarks, project results, proprietary metrics — is one of the strongest signals for earning citations in AI Overviews and assistants, precisely because it’s information those engines can’t find anywhere else.
