Sales Rep Ordering in B2B Ecommerce

Sales rep ordering allows a salesperson to create or manage ecommerce orders on behalf of a customer account. The rep can use the customer’s catalog, contract pricing, shipping locations, payment terms, and approvals while maintaining an auditable account context.

The salesperson may act as an authorized proxy for the customer while still preserving the customer’s account pricing, catalog, credit, and shipping rules. The feature is useful when some buyers prefer assisted service, when a rep creates orders during calls or field visits, or when complex products require guidance before purchase.

Sales-rep ordering can include:

• Selecting or switching into an assigned customer account with controlled permissions.

• Building carts and quotes using the customer’s own pricing and product eligibility.

• Saving drafts for buyer approval or completing the order when policy allows.

• Recording the responsible salesperson for attribution, commission, or service history.

The portal should make it clear who performed each action: the customer and the sales rep are different identities even if the order belongs to the same account. Auditability is important for discounts, approvals, and disputes. Done well, sales-rep ordering complements self-service instead of competing with it by giving the same account data and commerce rules to both channels.

Example: During a phone call, a sales rep can enter the customer’s account, build a cart with that customer’s negotiated prices, and save it for approval without using a generic internal price list.
