DMI B2B Online Store: BigCommerce Enterprise Replatforming with Microsoft Dynamics NAV ERP Integration

BigCommerce Enterprise B2B Edition implementation, Microsoft Dynamics NAV ERP integration, and a custom self-service customer portal for a 150,000-product B2B distributor

DMI B2B Online Store: BigCommerce Enterprise Replatforming with Microsoft Dynamics NAV ERP Integration

Project Summary

Elogic Commerce partnered with DMI, a B2B distributor selling from a catalog of 150,000 products, to lead a full replatforming of its online store, from strategy and requirements mapping through execution, onto BigCommerce Enterprise B2B Edition. The engagement replaced a heavily customized legacy setup with a standard-based commerce core, while preserving DMI’s ERP as the single source of truth for pricing, stock, orders, invoices, and delivery notes across both online and offline sales channels.

Managing customer-specific and category-specific tax exemptions, a Spain-specific statutory levy fee, real-time stock and price validation, and a fully custom ERP-connected customer portal, DMI required a platform architecture that stayed close to standard wherever possible while concentrating custom engineering precisely where the business genuinely needed it.

Key Outcomes

45%

reduction in manual order-entry workload

25-27%

increase in orders placed online

64%

of customers actively using the custom self-service portal

About the Client

DMI operates a B2B online store selling from a catalog of 150,000 products, with 15,000 active for sale at any given time. The business runs on an ERP-centralized backend managing pricing, stock, orders, invoices, and delivery notes across both online and offline (non-web) sales channels. DMI’s customer base includes resellers with special tax treatment, VAT-exempt purchasing on specific product categories, and buyers requiring visibility into contract-specific pricing, stock availability, and order history spanning both ecommerce and offline transactions.

Before the engagement, DMI’s ecommerce operation carried significant technical debt and needed a partner to lead the full transformation: assessing the current state, defining the target architecture, and executing the build.

Project Complexity

This engagement combined a standards-first platform replatforming with deep ERP integration complexity, while preserving jurisdiction-specific tax logic and full order-history continuity across online and offline channels.

ERP as the system of truth, ecommerce as the presentation layer

Nearly every core function, stock visibility, pricing, order history, invoices, delivery notes, returns, needed to be sourced live from DMI’s ERP rather than duplicated into BigCommerce, requiring a dedicated API integration layer rather than a standard product and price import.

Customer-specific, category-specific tax logic

DMI’s reseller customers required VAT-exempt pricing on specific product categories, determined per customer and per category, requiring a custom tax-calculation extension that BigCommerce’s native tax engine could not handle out of the box.

Spain-specific digital canon (levy) fee

Certain products required an additional statutory fee applied only when the shipping address was in Spain, added automatically as a line item tied to specific products, non-removable independently of its parent product, and subject to its own VAT treatment, a jurisdiction-specific business rule with no standard platform equivalent.

Real-time stock and price validation at checkout

Because pricing and stock lived in the ERP rather than natively in BigCommerce, the checkout flow needed a custom validation call to DMI’s API at the point of purchase to confirm stock and price hadn’t changed, with the standard BigCommerce checkout modified and self-hosted to support this validation step.

Fully custom, ERP-sourced customer area across a 150,000-product catalog

The standard BigCommerce customer account area needed to be disconnected and replaced with a custom-built portal serving order history (including offline/non-web orders), invoices, delivery notes, returns, and special customer-specific conditions, sourced live from DMI’s ERP-backed API rather than BigCommerce’s native order data.

Business Challenge

01

Accumulated legacy technical debt

DMI needed a standard, maintainable ecommerce core rather than continuing to build one-off custom logic across the entire platform.

02

ERP data fragmentation risk

Pricing, stock, and order data needed to remain centralized in DMI’s ERP as the single source of truth, without duplicating or fragmenting that data into the ecommerce platform.

03

Incomplete order visibility

Customers needed visibility into their full order, invoice, and delivery note history, including offline transactions never placed through the website.

04

Jurisdiction-specific tax requirements

Spain-specific tax rules, reseller VAT exemption and the digital canon fee, needed to be enforced automatically and accurately at checkout.

05

Heavy reliance on manual order processing

A significant share of order volume relied on manual entry, driving operational cost and discrepancy risk.

06

Need for a single accountable partner

DMI needed a partner to own the engagement end-to-end, from initial technical assessment through platform decision, requirements mapping, and execution.

Elogic Commerce's Solution

Technical Assessment and Platform Strategy

Elogic Commerce assessed DMI’s existing ecommerce environment and business requirements, and established the target architecture principle guiding the entire engagement: maximize functionality covered by platform standard, minimize custom development and long-term maintenance burden, and select a platform positioned for sustained technology currency. This assessment led to the recommendation of BigCommerce as a SaaS-based commerce core that could cover the majority of DMI’s requirements without unnecessary platform customization.

Requirements Mapping

Elogic Commerce mapped DMI’s full functional and technical requirements, working through catalog scale, customer segmentation, tax treatment, ERP data dependencies, offline order visibility, and the private customer area, translating them into a scoped, deliverable-by-deliverable implementation plan before development began.

BigCommerce Enterprise B2B Edition Implementation

Elogic Commerce implemented and configured a BigCommerce B2B Edition instance across a 150,000-product catalog, keeping configuration, checkout, shipping, payment methods, and search as close to platform standard as possible, with template and design adjustments scoped and time-boxed to protect long-term maintainability.

Real-Time Stock and Price Validation

Elogic Commerce implemented a checkout-time validation call to DMI’s API confirming stock availability and current pricing before order completion, with the standard BigCommerce checkout modified and self-hosted to support this validation step, warning customers of any change before they finalize their order.

Custom Tax and Digital Canon Logic

Elogic Commerce built a custom BigCommerce extension handling per-customer, per-category VAT exemption for reseller customers, and a separate, Spain-specific digital canon fee system that automatically applies, removes, and recalculates statutory levy charges based on shipping destination and product type.

Custom ERP-Connected Customer Portal

Elogic Commerce disconnected BigCommerce’s native customer account area and built a fully custom portal covering order history and search (online and offline orders), repeat ordering, returns with date-based eligibility rules, invoices and delivery notes, customer-specific special conditions, and address management for high-volume address books, all served through a dedicated integration with DMI’s API.

Segmented Content and Access Control

Elogic Commerce implemented customer-segment-targeted carousel and banner widgets within BigCommerce’s native Page Builder, price-visibility toggling for customers requiring hidden or distributor pricing, and access restrictions on private, authentication-only sections of the site.
