PunchOut Catalog: What It Is & How It Works

A PunchOut catalog is a supplier’s online catalog that connects directly into a buyer’s procurement system (their e-procurement or ERP platform), so purchasing staff can shop the supplier’s store without leaving their own system. The buyer “punches out” from their procurement software to the supplier’s site, builds a cart, and sends it back as a ready-to-approve requisition — with the supplier’s real-time pricing and availability intact.

Technically, it works over a standard protocol — most commonly cXML (Ariba) or OCI (SAP) — that links the two systems. A typical flow looks like this:

  • Punch out — the buyer clicks the supplier in their procurement system and is passed, pre-authenticated, into the supplier’s storefront
  • Shop — they browse contract-specific catalogs and pricing, and fill a cart on the supplier’s site
  • Transfer back — the cart returns to the procurement system as a requisition, no manual re-keying
  • Approve & order — internal approval runs, then a purchase order is sent back to the supplier

The point of PunchOut is to combine the buyer’s procurement controls with the supplier’s live catalog. Large organizations require purchases to flow through their approval and budgeting systems, but those systems can’t easily hold a supplier’s full, constantly changing catalog. PunchOut solves both: buyers keep their governance and audit trail, while seeing accurate, contract-specific pricing and stock straight from the supplier.

For suppliers, PunchOut is often a requirement to sell to enterprise B2B buyers at all — procurement-mandated accounts simply won’t order any other way. On Adobe Commerce, PunchOut (cXML/OCI) is delivered through the native B2B module plus custom integration, and, like every B2B feature, it’s only as reliable as the ERP feed and pricing logic beneath it.
