Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) Explained

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content to directly answer specific questions, so it gets surfaced as the answer by engines that return responses rather than lists — featured snippets, voice assistants, “People Also Ask,” and AI-generated answers. Instead of optimizing a page to rank, AEO optimizes individual passages to be the concise, extractable answer to a clearly-phrased question.

The idea behind AEO is that a growing share of searches are questions expecting a direct answer, not a list of links to browse. When someone asks a voice assistant or types a question, the engine wants one clear response — so content that states the answer plainly, right where the question is asked, is what gets selected. AEO shapes content to fit that answer-shaped slot.

The core tactics are practical and repeatable:

  • Question-based headings — phrasing headings the way people actually ask (“How do I…?”)
  • Answer-first passages — a direct, self-contained answer immediately under each question, then context
  • Concise, extractable formatting — short definitions, lists, and tables an engine can lift cleanly
  • FAQ structure — genuine Q&A blocks, reinforced with FAQPage schema markup

AEO matters because question-based and voice search keep growing, and answer engines increasingly satisfy queries on the results page itself. It overlaps heavily with Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — the distinction is emphasis: AEO focuses on answering discrete questions (including snippets and voice), while GEO focuses on being cited inside longer AI-generated answers. In practice they share the same foundation — clear structure, direct answers, and clean formatting — and, together with LLM Optimization (LLMO), are best pursued as one effort to optimize for an answer-first, AI-mediated search landscape.
