Shopify Functions Explained

Shopify Functions are a way to customize Shopify’s back-end logic with custom code that runs directly on Shopify’s infrastructure — changing how discounts, shipping, payment methods, and other core behaviors work. Instead of relying on external apps that call out to their own servers, Functions execute inside Shopify itself, which makes the custom logic fast and reliable without adding network round-trips.

The problem Functions solve is customizing core commerce logic that used to be closed off or slow. Previously, altering how a discount calculated or how shipping options were filtered meant either accepting Shopify’s defaults or bolting on third-party apps that added latency and complexity. Functions let developers replace specific pieces of that back-end logic with their own, running natively at speed.

Common uses of Shopify Functions include:

  • Discounts — custom promotion logic beyond native rules (tiered, bundled, B2B-specific)
  • Shipping — customizing which delivery options appear and how they’re ranked
  • Payments — showing, hiding, or reordering payment methods by conditions
  • Cart and checkout validation — enforcing rules like minimums, quantities, or restrictions

Shopify Functions matter because they let merchants tailor core behavior while staying on Shopify’s fast, upgrade-safe infrastructure — a key part of building sophisticated stores without sacrificing performance or maintainability. They’re one of the building blocks of checkout extensibility, and are especially useful for B2B, where custom discount, pricing-rule, and validation logic is often exactly what separates a workable wholesale store from a generic one.
