Infographics

Infographics are visual representations of certain information which aims to present it faster and more comprehensively. Nowadays, infographics are made mostly with the usage of computer software; however, before the appearance of specific software infographics have been created by hand using everyday tools (pencils, markers, etc.). 

Metro maps are well-known examples of infographics. 

Components of infographics and data visualization

Normally, infographics consist of 3 parts. They are:

  • Visual part, which includes graphs and data’s visual representation. 
  • Content, which consists of statistics and facts. Data for the content part of infographics can be obtained from multiple sources, such as news reports, data centers, and others.
  • Knowledge. This part explains all the data presented, gives proved facts, and raises deductions

Many infographics use data visualization to represent a piece of information. Data visualization is a part of an infographic but is not a synonym to it.

Types of data visualization in infographics

There are 4 different types of data visualization:

  • Time-series data. This type of data represents a specific phenomenon and how it changed within a certain period of time. Stock market index charts are a perfect example of time-series data.
  • Maps, or geographical data. With the help of maps, one can provide various types of data, like, for example, electoral results of the presidential election or the percentage of sales of a product in different countries or cities. 
  • Hierarchies. One of the popular types of hierarchical data visualization is a treemap. Treemaps use nested figures (mostly rectangles) to display certain data. By using different colors and sizes, the treemap visually shows the contrasting difference between the two components the graph, which is usually represented in percents or numbers that can be vaguely understood.
  • Network visualization. It is used to represent relationships between entities in form of dots, which are connected with a help of lines (connections between them)

Reasons to use infographics

Infographics can help represent complex things in a simple manner. Apart from that, there are other reasons why they can be useful:

  • Mobile-friendly. Usually, infographics are made in a portrait format, which makes them perfect for scrolling on phones and tablets.
  • It is more visible. The ultimate goal of each infographic is to visually represent the required data. Appropriate keywords combined with a good infographic can boost the click-through rate with ease.
  • Infographics can easily go viral. When the infographic is provided regarding a popular event or explains a certain topic easily, users tend to share it eagerly via multiple channels.
