Summary

Key takeaways

  • Magento Open Source has no license fee, but running a production store still requires budget for hosting, development, integrations, security, support, and upgrades.
  • Adobe Commerce pricing is quote-based and typically scales with GMV, average order value, transaction volume, contract terms, and negotiated commercial conditions.
  • Adobe Commerce is now available through several models, including on-premises, Adobe Commerce on Cloud, Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service, and Adobe Commerce Optimizer.
  • Adobe Commerce on Cloud includes managed infrastructure, while merchants and implementation partners still remain responsible for application code, extensions, and platform upgrades.
  • Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service follows a SaaS model in which Adobe manages the application layer and core platform upgrades.
  • The platform license is only one part of Magento TCO; hosting, implementation, extensions, integrations, maintenance, and upgrades can materially exceed the license cost.
  • ERP, PIM, CRM, OMS, payment, and other integrations are often among the largest implementation expenses in complex B2B and enterprise projects.
  • Hyvä Theme becoming free removes one recurring frontend license cost, although design, implementation, customization, and maintenance still require development budget.
  • Supported-version deadlines should be included in financial planning because delayed upgrades can turn predictable maintenance into expensive emergency projects.
  • Magento edition selection should be based on business complexity, customization requirements, B2B needs, integrations, ownership model, and multi-year TCO rather than entry price alone.

When this applies

This applies when a company is budgeting a new Magento or Adobe Commerce implementation, evaluating an upgrade, considering migration from another platform, or comparing Adobe Commerce with alternatives such as Shopify Plus. It is particularly relevant for mid-market and enterprise merchants with complex B2B workflows, ERP integrations, custom pricing, large catalogs, or significant customization requirements. The framework is also useful when finance and technology teams need to understand how platform licensing translates into the real annual cost of operating Adobe Commerce.

When this does not apply

This does not apply when the business only needs the price of a small Magento extension, theme customization, or isolated development task. It is also premature to select an Adobe Commerce edition based on estimated license pricing before defining the required workflows, integrations, transaction volume, hosting model, and customization depth. Magento Open Source should not automatically be treated as the cheapest option simply because its license is free, just as Adobe Commerce Cloud should not automatically be selected because infrastructure is bundled.

Checklist

  1. Define the required B2B, B2C, or hybrid commerce functionality.
  2. Estimate current and projected annual GMV and order volume.
  3. Request an official Adobe Commerce quote rather than treating public estimates as fixed prices.
  4. Compare Magento Open Source, Adobe Commerce on-premises, Cloud, SaaS, and Optimizer where relevant.
  5. Decide who should own hosting, infrastructure, application upgrades, and release management.
  6. Estimate discovery, UX, development, QA, and deployment costs separately from licensing.
  7. Inventory all required third-party extensions and recurring renewal fees.
  8. Map ERP, PIM, CRM, OMS, payment, tax, and other integration requirements.
  9. Estimate integration development and ongoing operational costs.
  10. Include security patches, monitoring, maintenance, and technical support from year one.
  11. Review the current Adobe Commerce support lifecycle and budget planned upgrades.
  12. Include frontend implementation costs even when using the free Hyvä Theme.
  13. Model internal team or external development capacity required to operate the platform.
  14. Build a three-to-five-year TCO model rather than comparing first-year platform fees.
  15. Select the edition and deployment model that provide the required capabilities with acceptable long-term operating cost.

Common pitfalls

  • Assuming Magento Open Source is inexpensive because the software license is free.
  • Comparing Adobe Commerce with SaaS competitors using platform fees alone.
  • Treating estimated Adobe Commerce license ranges as official Adobe list prices.
  • Forgetting that Adobe Commerce on Cloud customers still own application upgrades and custom code.
  • Underestimating ERP, PIM, CRM, OMS, and other integration costs.
  • Treating implementation cost as the complete cost of owning the platform.
  • Installing numerous paid extensions without accounting for renewal, compatibility, and upgrade costs.
  • Delaying supported-version upgrades until they become urgent and significantly more expensive.
  • Selecting the SaaS or Cloud model without checking whether its ownership and customization model matches business requirements.
  • Choosing an Adobe Commerce edition before defining the functionality, architecture, and operating model the business actually needs.

By Paul Okhrem, CEO and Founder, Elogic Commerce. Technical review: Volodymyr Leshchyshyn. Sources checked: October 2026.

An Adobe Commerce license costs about $22,000 a year on-premises and $40,000 on cloud infrastructure under $1M GMV, based on partner estimates. Adobe does not publish a price list. Large stores pay about $125,000 to $190,000 or more. The Elogic Commerce Adobe Commerce Pricing Index 2027 checks each band against three or more sources.

Key numbers from the Elogic Commerce Adobe Commerce Pricing Index 2027

  1. On-premises license: about $22,000 a year under $1M GMV, rising to about $125,000 or more for large stores.
  2. Cloud infrastructure license: about $40,000 a year under $1M GMV, rising to about $190,000 or more.
  3. Total cost of ownership is usually 2 to 3 times the license fee or more.
  4. Magento Open Source has no license fee. The Hyvä Theme is also free since November 10, 2025.

How does Adobe price Adobe Commerce?

Adobe prices Adobe Commerce with a quote-based annual license. The price depends on gross merchandise value, average order value, order volume, the deployment model and the contract terms.

Adobe does not publish a price list, so all public figures are estimates from partners and agencies.

How much is an Adobe Commerce license by GMV?

An Adobe Commerce license costs about $22,000 a year on-premises and $40,000 on cloud infrastructure under $1M GMV. At $5M to $10M GMV, it costs about $49,000 and $80,000.

What is the total cost of ownership of Adobe Commerce?

The total cost of ownership of Adobe Commerce is usually 2 to 3 times the license fee or more. It adds hosting, implementation, extensions, support and upgrades to the license.

Security belongs in the total cost too. A data breach cost $4.99 million on average in 2026, and $11.5 million in the United States, according to the IBM Cost of a Data Breach Report. A supported release line with current patches lowers that risk.

Which seven cost layers belong in a Magento total cost model?

The total investment has more moving parts than the license fee. The current Elogic Commerce pricing guide separates seven operational layers so a merchant can identify one-time expenses, ongoing commitments and costs that appear at renewal or upgrade time.

Cost layerTypical scopeHow to budget it
LicenseMagento Open Source or Adobe Commerce contractUse the actual Adobe quote and the current GMV forecast. Open Source has no platform license fee.

The six-layer diagram in the Elogic Commerce Adobe Commerce Pricing Index 2027 groups integrations within implementation and operations. This seven-layer view gives finance and engineering teams a more detailed operating worksheet; it is not a second price estimate.

Year-one implementation and annual operating costs should be shown separately. A ratio such as two to three times the license is a planning signal, not a substitute for a scoped total cost of ownership calculation. The Adobe Commerce Team Cost Calculator helps model dedicated engineering capacity, while Magento support covers ongoing maintenance.

Which Adobe Commerce option fits your budget?

Magento Open Source fits the smallest budgets because it has no license fee. Adobe Commerce on-premises and on cloud infrastructure have GMV-based licenses, and Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service is quote-based.

What changed in Magento pricing and ownership in 2026?

Several platform and lifecycle changes affect budgets beyond Adobe Commerce license negotiations. The current Elogic Commerce pricing guide highlighted new commercial options, supported-version deadlines and the cost of ongoing patch management.

  1. Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service and Adobe Commerce Optimizer joined the deployment choices in 2025. Pricing remains quote-based, so merchants should compare the scope and obligations in each contract.
  2. The 2.4.6 release line reached the end of standard support on August 11, 2026. Older release lines already passed standard support; extended support for eligible Adobe Commerce 2.4.6 customers differs from Magento Open Source.
  3. Adobe Commerce 2.4.9 became generally available on May 12, 2026. Merchants should check their specific release line, security updates and compatible extensions rather than assuming the platform updates itself.
  4. Adobe’s lifecycle policy describes further enforcement for unsupported Adobe Commerce on cloud infrastructure environments beginning June 1, 2027. Verify the current policy for the contracted environment.
  5. Hyvä Theme became free and open source on November 10, 2025. Hyvä Checkout and some other Hyvä products remain commercial.

The practical consequence is to reserve money for patches and upgrades even when a license or managed-cloud contract is already paid. Use the Magento 2 migration service when upgrade work also requires custom-code or integration remediation.

How does Adobe Commerce cost compare with other platforms?

Adobe Commerce uses a GMV-based annual license. Shopify Plus uses a monthly subscription, Salesforce Commerce Cloud takes a share of GMV, and commercetools uses a quote-based annual license.

Compare the license models before you compare features. Read the Elogic Commerce pricing guides for Shopify Plus, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, commercetools and BigCommerce. For the full build budget on any platform, read the Elogic Commerce Ecommerce Website Cost Index 2027.

For comparison, Shopify Plus costs $2,300 a month on a three-year term or $2,500 on a one-year term in 2026. Above about $800,000 in monthly sales, it charges 0.35% to 0.40% of sales, capped at $40,000 a month.

Magento or Shopify Plus: how do their operating costs differ?

Adobe Commerce and Shopify Plus are priced differently, and each moves responsibility between the merchant, the platform provider and the implementation team. The earlier Magento pricing article compared these options as operating models rather than a simple license contest.

ConsiderationMagento Open SourceAdobe Commerce on cloud infrastructureShopify Plus
Platform entry feeNo license feeEstimated from about $40,000 annually for the lowest GMV bandFrom $2,300 per month on a three-year term in 2026

Shopify Plus may reduce infrastructure and core-update responsibilities, while Adobe Commerce can fit extensive B2B pricing and integration rules. Neither platform wins on total cost without a requirements-based estimate. Compare the Shopify Plus pricing guide and the Ecommerce Website Cost Index before selecting a platform.

How can you lower Adobe Commerce cost?

Lower Adobe Commerce cost with a realistic GMV forecast, fewer extensions, the free Hyvä Theme and a supported release line. Also compare Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service and use a dedicated team.

  1. Negotiate the license on a realistic GMV forecast.
  2. Remove extensions that you do not use or that duplicate native features.
  3. Use the free Hyvä Theme for a faster frontend without a theme license.
  4. Stay on a supported release line to avoid emergency upgrade work.
  5. Compare Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service with your current setup.
  6. Use a dedicated team for ongoing work instead of ad hoc requests.

Run the Adobe Commerce Code Audit Report 2026 self-check to find the cost drivers in your current store.

The Hyvä Theme has been free since November 10, 2025, and runs on about 6,400 to 6,700 live stores. Team location also changes the budget: Magento developers cost about $40 to $80 per hour in Eastern Europe and $60 to $130 in Western Europe.

How does Elogic Commerce price Adobe Commerce work?

Elogic Commerce projects start at $25,000, with a Clutch hourly rate of $50 to $99 per hour. Elogic Commerce can start a pre-vetted Adobe Commerce squad in under 7 days.

What should an Adobe Commerce budget include before approval?

Before choosing an edition, map the business requirements and all systems that affect pricing, stock, orders and customer accounts. A low software fee is not evidence of the lowest implementation or operating cost.

  1. Document B2C, B2B and marketplace requirements, catalog size and custom workflows.
  2. Choose the capabilities that actually require Adobe Commerce rather than Magento Open Source.
  3. Ask Adobe to confirm the GMV, order-volume, AOV and contract assumptions in writing.
  4. Separate SaaS, cloud infrastructure and on-premises deployment responsibilities.
  5. Inventory extensions, subscriptions and their upgrade requirements.
  6. List ERP, PIM, CRM, OMS, tax, payments, shipping, search and analytics integrations.
  7. Estimate migration of products, customers, company accounts, orders, URLs and SEO metadata.
  8. Budget UX design, theme changes, custom frontend development and accessibility.
  9. Allow for testing, security, staging, deployment and performance engineering.
  10. Include the internal product and engineering team alongside external development costs.
  11. Fund ongoing patching, infrastructure, monitoring and support.
  12. Plan supported release upgrades and third-party module compatibility work.
  13. Compare platform choices with the same written scope and risk assumptions.
  14. Model the next three to five years rather than only launch spending.
  15. Review the total with finance, operations and technical owners before signing.

Typical omissions: extension renewals, complex ERP exceptions, content preparation, repeated migration rehearsals and incident-response coverage. Each can change the total after a license quote is agreed.

Methodology

  • Rule. Elogic Commerce publishes a band only when at least three independent 2026 sources give matching estimates.
  • Sources. Partner and agency pricing reviews, listed at the end of this page.
  • Rounding. Elogic Commerce rounds each band to the nearest thousand US dollars.
  • Data download. Download the bands (CSV).

Limitations. Adobe sets each price in a private quote. Discounts, contract length and region change the final price. For stores above $10M GMV, the sources give wider ranges, so Table 1 shows a range.

Disclosure. Elogic Commerce is an Adobe Commerce Silver Solution Partner and sells Adobe Commerce services.
