Keyword Stuffing

Keyword stuffing is a practice, in which keywords are included in meta tags and page’s visible content in order for search engines to place this website higher in search results. Although this technique isn’t popular due to the fact it creates a bad user experience and doesn’t boost the website’s page visibility for search engines significantly, some ecommerce businesses are using it to try getting more of organic traffic.

Keyword stuffing is considered an outdated technology, because many search engines like Bing and Google no longer give high ranks to pages employing this approach. If you’re interested in new methods of effective SEO, please consider reading our article on SEO tips and tricks.

Types and examples of keyword stuffing

There are different types of keyword stuffing. They include:

  • Words, which are out of context. It can be seen when a certain paragraph includes indeclinable words or phrases, which seem to be meaningless according to the context.
  • Keywords, which are irrelevant to the topic of the page.
  • The repetition of words and phrases, which are unnecessary.

There are also types of keyword stuffing, which are hidden from users. For instance, website owners can use text, which has the same color as the background of their website page, therefore this text won’t be seen by users when they click the page, but it will be visible for the search engine. Also, keywords can be repeated in the page’s code, meta tags, and comment tags, which is also considered a form of stuffing.

Let’s say, as an example, you want to purchase a case for your smartphone and type “buy leather phone case”. Websites that want to be ranked higher with a help of key stuffing will write something like this:

“Want to buy leather phone case? Great news: our company offers you to buy leather phone case for your smartphone. Using only quality material you can buy leather phone case and have your order delivered in 3 working days!

Stuffing and keyword density

Unlike keyword stuffing, keyword density is an element of SEO, which helps to identify whether or not the content of one’s webpage is relevant to a particular keyword or phrase or not. There isn’t any ideal keyword density percentage, but SEO experts believe, that a good density is around 1-2%, which is 2 keywords per 100 words.
