Summary
Key takeaways
- Shopify B2B supports company accounts, multiple locations, customer-specific catalogs, negotiated pricing, quantity rules, payment terms, purchase-order numbers, quick ordering, and reorders.
- Shopify Plus is no longer required for basic B2B functionality; lower paid plans now include many core B2B capabilities, while Plus adds advanced catalog, payment, checkout, and governance options.
- Shopify Plus works particularly well for hybrid B2B and DTC businesses that want both channels within the same managed SaaS ecosystem.
- Companies and Locations form the foundation of Shopify B2B, allowing pricing, catalogs, payment terms, tax settings, addresses, and permissions to vary by business account or location.
- Customer-specific pricing works well when prices can be prepared in advance, but complex real-time ERP pricing may require middleware, custom applications, or an external pricing engine.
- Shopify supports quick ordering, reordering, quantity rules, volume pricing, and purchase-order numbers, making it suitable for many repeat wholesale purchasing scenarios.
- Native Shopify B2B becomes less suitable when businesses need formal RFQ negotiation, multi-stage buyer approvals, sophisticated requisition lists, or deep procurement workflows.
- PunchOut, cXML, OCI, and EDI are not complete native Shopify capabilities and normally require specialist connectors or custom integration.
- ERP, PIM, OMS, WMS, CRM, and finance systems should remain authoritative for the business data they own rather than turning Shopify into an accidental system of record.
- The blended-versus-dedicated B2B storefront decision should be made early because changing the model later can require significant rebuilding of catalogs, accounts, integrations, and storefront logic.
When this applies
This applies when a manufacturer, distributor, wholesaler, or hybrid B2B/DTC merchant wants to move wholesale operations online using a managed SaaS platform. It is particularly suitable when the business needs company accounts, customer-specific catalogs, volume pricing, payment terms, purchase-order numbers, quick ordering, reordering, international commerce, and ERP-connected operations without taking responsibility for the full application infrastructure. Shopify Plus becomes especially relevant when the organization needs unlimited or directly assigned B2B catalogs, advanced payment options, deeper checkout extensibility, greater integration capacity, or enterprise governance.
When this does not apply
This does not apply when the business requires highly complex procurement workflows that Shopify would need substantial customization to reproduce. Formal RFQ negotiation, multi-level buyer approvals, advanced requisition management, deep PunchOut, complex parent-child company structures, engineer-to-order configuration, or real-time ERP pricing across thousands of accounts may be better handled by specialized applications, external services, or a platform with deeper native B2B functionality. Shopify Plus should also not be selected simply because the company needs B2B, since many core B2B features are now available on lower Shopify plans.
Checklist
- Decide whether B2B and DTC should operate in a blended store or separate storefronts.
- Map companies, branches, locations, buyers, administrators, and account relationships.
- Identify which catalogs, products, prices, payment terms, and shipping rules differ by account.
- Define the authoritative system for customers, products, pricing, inventory, orders, and invoices.
- Design wholesale registration, account approval, and onboarding workflows.
- Configure customer-specific catalogs, volume pricing, quantity increments, and minimum quantities.
- Define payment terms, deposits, partial payments, credit rules, and tax exemptions.
- Add Quick Order, purchase-order numbers, reordering, and other repeat-purchasing tools.
- Determine whether buyer permissions require more than Shopify’s native company roles.
- Document RFQ, quoting, and quote-to-order requirements before selecting extensions.
- Identify PunchOut, cXML, OCI, EDI, or procurement-system requirements.
- Map ERP, PIM, CRM, OMS, WMS, and finance integrations before storefront development.
- Define synchronization latency, retries, reconciliation, fallback behavior, and monitoring.
- Identify requirements that need custom applications, middleware, CPQ, or external pricing services.
- Test the complete B2B journey with real customers and internal sales teams before broad rollout.
Common pitfalls
- Treating B2B ecommerce as standard Shopify with wholesale discounts added on top.
- Upgrading to Shopify Plus solely because the business needs B2B functionality.
- Choosing a blended B2B/DTC store without testing how catalogs, discounts, shipping, and payments interact across customer types.
- Importing customers before properly mapping companies, locations, and account hierarchies.
- Assuming Shopify’s basic buyer roles provide a complete enterprise purchasing approval system.
- Using checkout-to-draft as a substitute for formal RFQ negotiation or buyer-side approval workflows.
- Assuming purchase-order number support is equivalent to PunchOut or procurement-system integration.
- Bringing ERP, CRM, or PIM integration into the project only after storefront development is already underway.
- Allowing Shopify to become the master for pricing, inventory, credit, or other data that belongs in operational systems.
- Launching without testing real wholesale scenarios such as contract pricing, reorders, payment terms, partial fulfillment, and integration failures.
Shopify Plus B2B is the complete version of the native wholesale features in Shopify. Since April 2, 2026, Basic, Grow and Advanced also include B2B. Shopify Plus still adds three things: more than 3 catalogs, catalogs assigned directly to a company location, and deposits or partial payments. Elogic Commerce calculates that Plus costs $24,012 per year more than Advanced.

This changes the Plus decision for most wholesale sellers. For a general introduction to the plan, read what Shopify Plus is.

“After April 2026, most wholesale sellers do not buy Shopify Plus for B2B features. They buy it for pricing scale and payment flexibility. Count your catalogs first. Then choose the plan.”Paul Okhrem, CEO & Founder, Elogic Commerce

Do you need Shopify Plus for B2B?
No, not for the core features. Since April 2, 2026, companies, catalogs, net payment terms, quantity rules and self-serve reorders are on every paid Shopify plan. You need Shopify Plus when you need more than 3 catalogs, contract price lists for single buyers, or deposits and partial payments.

What does Shopify Plus add for B2B?
Shopify Plus adds three B2B capabilities that the other plans do not have: unlimited B2B catalogs, catalogs assigned directly to a company or company location, and advanced payments (deposits, partial payments and payment requests per fulfillment). Plus also includes up to 9 expansion stores for a dedicated B2B store.
| Plus-only capability | What it does | You need it when | Option on Advanced |
|---|---|---|---|
| More than 3 catalogs | Removes the store-wide limit of 3 active B2B catalogs. | You have more price levels or pricing regions than 3 catalogs can hold. | Merge price levels into 3 or fewer. Or use a wholesale pricing app. |
| Direct company catalogs | Assigns a catalog to one company or company location. This gives customer-level pricing. | A buyer has a negotiated contract price list. | No native option. Use a wholesale pricing app or a custom app. |
| Advanced payments | Deposits for companies and draft orders, partial payments, payment requests per fulfillment. | You build to order, sell high-value equipment, or ship one order in parts. | Send manual invoices outside checkout. |
Plus also gives more checkout customization and higher API limits for ERP integration. For payment terms data across B2B markets, read our B2B payments statistics.
What are the Shopify B2B limits?
The Shopify B2B limit that most sellers reach first is 3 active catalogs on Basic, Grow and Advanced. Other hard limits apply on all plans: 25 catalogs per company location, 10,000 customers per company and 50 customers per company location. The Elogic Commerce Shopify B2B Limits Sheet lists all nine limits.
| Limit | Value | Plans | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Active B2B catalogs, store-wide, across all B2B markets | 3 | Basic, Grow, Advanced | Shopify Help: plan features |
| B2B catalogs | Unlimited | Plus | Shopify Help: plan features |
| Catalogs assigned to one company location (market and direct) | 25 | All plans | Shopify Help: catalogs with Markets |
| Customers per company | 10,000 | All plans | Shopify Help: creating companies |
| Customers per company location | 50 | All plans | Shopify Help: creating companies |
| Direct catalog assignment to a company location | Plus only | Plus | Shopify Help: plan features |
| Contextual checkout and storefront | Available | Advanced, Plus | Shopify Help: plan features |
| New Shopify Markets for B2B catalogs | Required | Basic, Grow, Advanced | Shopify Help: plan features |
| Expansion stores included | Up to 9 | Plus | Shopify Plus pricing |
If you assign 3 catalogs to one B2B market, you use the full limit on Basic, Grow and Advanced. To add a catalog to a different market, you must first remove or draft an assignment. You can copy this table. Please link to this page as the source.
How many B2B catalogs do you need?
The Elogic Commerce catalog count test estimates the catalogs that a B2B business needs: price levels x pricing regions + contract accounts. If the result is more than 3, you need Shopify Plus. Example: 2 price levels in 2 regions with 4 contract accounts need 8 catalogs.
Catalogs needed = price levels x pricing regions + contract accounts
- Price levels: the number of different wholesale price levels, for example distributor, dealer and retailer.
- Pricing regions: the number of B2B markets that need different prices or currencies.
- Contract accounts: the number of buyers with their own negotiated price list.
On Basic, Grow and Advanced, the result must be 3 or less. Contract prices for single buyers work best with direct company catalogs, and these need Plus. On Plus, there is no store-wide limit. Each company location can have a maximum of 25 catalogs.
| Business profile | Levels | Regions | Contracts | Catalogs | Minimum plan |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DTC brand that adds wholesale for stockists | 1 | 1 | 0 | 1 | Basic, Grow or Advanced |
| US distributor with distributor, dealer and retailer prices | 3 | 1 | 0 | 3 | Advanced (at the limit) |
| EU wholesaler that sells in 4 currencies with 2 price levels | 2 | 4 | 0 | 8 | Plus |
| Manufacturer in the US and EU with 4 national accounts | 2 | 2 | 4 | 8 | Plus |
How much does Shopify Plus B2B cost?
Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 per month on a 3-year term and $2,500 per month on a 1-year term. B2B features are included. At list prices, the Elogic Commerce Plus Premium Model puts the cost gap between Advanced and Plus at $24,012 to $25,212 per year.
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed yearly or term | Platform fee per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39 per month | $29 per month | $348 to $468 |
| Grow | $105 per month | $79 per month | $948 to $1,260 |
| Advanced | $399 per month | $299 per month | $3,588 to $4,788 |
| Plus | $2,500 per month (1-year term) | $2,300 per month (3-year term) | $27,600 to $30,000 |
The table shows the platform fee only. It does not include payment processing, apps or development. Sources: Shopify pricing and Shopify Plus pricing.
The variable platform fee
Shopify says that complex or high-volume businesses can get a variable platform fee. Shopify does not publish the rate. Several 2026 pricing analyses report a rate of 0.18% on B2B sales volume. If your contract uses this rate, the variable fee is more than the $2,300 base fee at approximately $1.28 million of B2B sales per month on a 3-year term. On a 1-year term, this point is approximately $1.39 million. Confirm the rate and the calculation method in your contract.
When does Shopify Plus pay for itself?
According to the Elogic Commerce Plus Premium Model, Shopify Plus pays for itself when its B2B features remove about 40 hours of manual work per month at $50 per hour, or add about $6,670 of B2B revenue per month at a 30% gross margin.
| Loaded staff cost per hour | Hours per month |
|---|---|
| $35 | 57 |
| $50 | 40 |
| $75 | 27 |
| Gross margin | Extra B2B revenue per month |
|---|---|
| 20% | $10,005 |
| 30% | $6,670 |
| 40% | $5,003 |
Work that Plus features can remove: manual deposit invoices, split invoices for partial shipments, and price overrides on draft orders for contract accounts. An app subscription alone rarely closes a gap of $2,001 per month. Labor and margin decide the case.
Which Shopify plan fits your B2B business?
Use the Elogic Commerce Shopify B2B Plan Fit Test. Answer five questions in order. The first Yes gives your minimum plan. If you answer No to all five questions, Basic, Grow or Advanced covers your B2B needs.
| # | Question | If Yes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Do you need punchout, EDI, or pricing that your ERP owns for thousands of accounts? | Do an architecture review first. Compare Shopify Plus with middleware and Adobe Commerce. |
| 2 | Do you need more than 3 catalogs? Use the catalog count test. | Shopify Plus |
| 3 | Do some buyers have their own contract price list? | Shopify Plus |
| 4 | Do you take deposits or partial payments, or bill per shipment? | Shopify Plus |
| 5 | Do you need a different checkout or storefront for each B2B market? | Shopify Advanced or higher |
| No to all five questions | Basic, Grow or Advanced |
If the test gives Plus, read how to upgrade to Shopify Plus. If you move from another platform, read our guide to Shopify Plus migration.
What does Shopify B2B not include?
Native Shopify B2B does not cover every B2B requirement. In Elogic Commerce projects, ERP integration, EDI, punchout, complex quotes, product configuration and credit control usually need an app, middleware or custom development.
- ERP integration: sync of companies, locations, contract prices, inventory and invoices with ERPs such as NetSuite, SAP S/4HANA, Microsoft Dynamics 365 or Visma.
- EDI: order and invoice exchange with large retail and distribution buyers.
- Punchout: your catalog inside the procurement system of the buyer.
- Complex quotes: negotiation with several rounds, approvals and expiry dates. The native checkout-to-draft flow covers simple quote requests.
- Product configuration: configurators, fitment data and parts diagrams for industrial catalogs.
- Credit control: credit limits and collections for orders on net terms.
Shopify ships product updates in its twice-yearly Editions. Check the latest Edition before you scope a custom build. For app options, read our list of the best Shopify Plus apps. If you plan a buyer portal, read our guide to the B2B portal.
Can one Shopify store serve B2B and DTC buyers?
Yes. Shopify supports B2B and DTC in one store, which Shopify calls a blended store. A dedicated B2B store is the other option. Shopify Plus includes up to 9 expansion stores, so a dedicated B2B store has no extra subscription fee on Plus.
On Basic, Grow and Advanced, a second store needs its own subscription. Decide early. If you change the model later, you can have to rebuild companies, catalogs and storefront settings.
Shopify Plus or Adobe Commerce for B2B?
Shopify Plus is usually the better B2B fit for fast launches and pricing that fits native catalogs. Adobe Commerce is usually the better fit for many customer groups with shared catalogs, multi-step quotes and approvals, and deep custom logic. Elogic Commerce delivers both platforms and gives a platform-neutral recommendation.
| Criterion | Shopify Plus | Adobe Commerce |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting model | SaaS. Shopify hosts and updates the platform. | Adobe-hosted cloud or self-managed infrastructure. |
| Customer-specific pricing | Catalogs: unlimited, assigned to markets, companies or locations. | Shared catalogs per company in the B2B module. |
| Quotes | Checkout to draft. Apps for multi-round negotiation. | Native negotiable quotes. |
| Order approvals | Apps or custom development. | Native purchase order approval rules. |
| Platform fee | Published base fee from $2,300 per month. | Quote-based license. |
| Best fit | Fast launch, small internal team, DTC and B2B in one admin. | Complex B2B logic, many customer groups, deep customization. |

Is Shopify B2B worth it?
Shopify B2B is worth it for most wholesale models whose pricing fits native catalogs. Elogic Commerce launched a Shopify Plus B2B channel for PetHQ in 2.5 months. The channel serves more than 1,400 wholesale users and added $1.1 million of new B2B revenue in the first year.
PetHQ needed self-serve wholesale ordering with account-level pricing. Elogic Commerce built the B2B channel on Shopify Plus. Read the PetHQ B2B case study and see our Shopify Plus development services.

Elogic Commerce verified the plan matrix and the limits against the Shopify Help Center on September 25, 2026. Prices are US list prices. We calculated the Plus premium and the break-even values from these list prices. The variable fee rate comes from third-party 2026 pricing analyses, because Shopify does not publish it.
