Summary
Key takeaways
- There is no universally best enterprise ecommerce platform; the right choice depends on business model, organizational complexity, integration landscape, growth plans, and engineering capacity.
- Enterprise platforms differ fundamentally in architecture, from proprietary SaaS and open SaaS to modular, self-managed, and composable models.
- Platform selection should begin with business and operating requirements rather than a shortlist of familiar vendor names.
- B2B, B2C, D2C, marketplace, and hybrid models create different requirements for pricing, accounts, catalogs, checkout, and backend integrations.
- Scalability should be evaluated against real peak-load scenarios, including seasonal campaigns, large catalogs, concurrent checkout activity, and international growth.
- Total cost of ownership includes much more than licensing: implementation, integrations, infrastructure, extensions, maintenance, upgrades, security, and internal engineering all matter.
- SaaS platforms generally reduce infrastructure and upgrade responsibility, while more flexible architectures place greater demands on engineering and governance.
- Integration fit with ERP, CRM, PIM, OMS, payment, fulfillment, and analytics systems can be more important than individual storefront features.
- Future-proofing comes primarily from choosing an architecture and ecosystem that fit the organization’s operating model, not from selecting the platform with the longest feature list.
- A proof of concept around the highest-risk workflows is often more valuable than generic demos when comparing final platform candidates.
When this applies
This applies when a mid-market or enterprise retailer, manufacturer, distributor, wholesaler, or D2C brand is selecting a new ecommerce platform or considering a major replatform. It is particularly relevant when the business has complex catalogs, multiple markets, heavy backend integrations, customer-specific workflows, high transaction volumes, or significant customization requirements. The framework is useful when platforms such as Adobe Commerce, Shopify Plus, BigCommerce, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, or composable alternatives all appear viable and the organization needs to compare them against the same business and architectural criteria.
When this does not apply
This does not apply when the business is early-stage, operates a simple store, has few integrations, and does not expect significant complexity or scale in the near term. A deep enterprise comparison can add unnecessary decision overhead when time-to-market, basic
An enterprise ecommerce platform is commerce software for high order volumes, complex catalogs, many markets and deep integration with ERP, PIM and CRM systems. In the Elogic Commerce Enterprise Ecommerce Platform Index 2027, Shopify Plus has the highest balanced score (83 of 100). Adobe Commerce has the highest complex B2B score (84 of 100). The correct choice depends on your B2B depth, cost model and integration load.
Key findings
- Shopify Plus leads the balanced profile with 83 of 100 points. Fast launch, a large ecosystem and early AI agent support give it the lead.
- Adobe Commerce leads the complex B2B profile with 84 of 100 points. The native B2B module and the largest partner ecosystem give it the lead.
- 5 of the 12 platforms are Leaders in the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Digital Commerce: Adobe, commercetools, Salesforce, SAP and Shopify. BigCommerce and VTEX are Challengers. The Elogic Commerce index adds price, time to launch and AI agent protocol support to that view.
- 4 of 12 platforms document support for the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) or the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). These are Shopify, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, BigCommerce and commercetools. Adobe committed to UCP and ACP in February 2026. See the Agentic Commerce Readiness Index 2026.
- Only 4 of 12 platforms show a public entry price. These are Shopify Plus (from 2,300 USD per month), Shopware (from 600 EUR per month), OroCommerce Community and Medusa.js (free open-source licenses).
- Salesforce publishes a revenue-based price for B2B Commerce: 1% of gross merchandise value (GMV) on Growth and 2% on Advanced.
- The license is often the smaller cost. Partner estimates put the Adobe Commerce license at 20% to 40% of annual spend. Shopware sources put the license at 15% to 25% of total cost.
What is an enterprise ecommerce platform?
An enterprise ecommerce platform is the software layer that runs catalogs, prices, carts, checkout, orders and customer accounts for a large business. It connects to back-office systems through APIs. It supports many storefronts, currencies and languages from one core.
Elogic Commerce uses 6 traits to separate an enterprise platform from a mid-market platform:
- Scale. The platform processes peak traffic and large catalogs without manual work.
- B2B capability. The platform supports company accounts, buyer roles, price lists, quotes and approvals.
- Integration. The platform exchanges data with ERP, PIM, CRM, OMS, tax and payment systems through documented APIs.
- Multi-site operations. One team runs many brands, countries and currencies.
- Governance. The platform has role-based access, audit logs, security certifications and a published support policy.
- Extensibility. Your team can add custom logic without changes to the platform core.
A mid-market platform usually has a subset of these traits. The difference is not the logo. The difference is how much custom work you need to meet your requirements.
Buyer expectations set the minimum. McKinsey’s 2026 Global B2B Pulse surveyed nearly 4,000 B2B decision-makers in 13 countries. Buyers use about 10 touchpoints for one purchase. Omnichannel sales and ecommerce are now minimum requirements, and buyers move to other suppliers when these requirements are not met. How the index compares with the Gartner Magic Quadrant
Gartner published its Magic Quadrant for Digital Commerce on 3 November 2025. It assesses 19 vendors. 11 of the 12 platforms in this index are part of that assessment. Medusa.js is not.
| Platform | Gartner Magic Quadrant 2025 | Elogic Commerce balanced rank |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Plus | Leader | 1 |
| Adobe Commerce | Leader (ninth consecutive year) | 2 |
| BigCommerce Enterprise | Challenger (sixth consecutive year) | 3 |
| Salesforce Commerce Cloud | Leader (tenth consecutive year) | 4 |
| commercetools | Leader (sixth consecutive year) | 5 |
| Shopware | Assessed (one of 19 vendors) | 6 |
| OroCommerce | Assessed (one of 19 vendors) | 6 |
| Medusa.js | Not assessed | 8 |
| Optimizely Configured Commerce | Assessed (one of 19 vendors) | 9 |
| Spryker | Assessed (one of 19 vendors) | 10 |
| SAP Commerce Cloud | Leader | 11 |
| VTEX | Challenger | 12 |
Sources: Gartner document abstract (3 November 2025) and vendor announcements. For assessed vendors that did not announce their quadrant, the table shows “Assessed”. Compiled by Elogic Commerce.
Why the two views differ: Gartner evaluates vendors on completeness of vision and ability to execute. The Elogic Commerce index evaluates fit for a buyer. It gives weight to published prices, time to launch and documented AI agent protocols. For example, SAP Commerce Cloud is a Gartner Leader with strong B2B depth. Its quote-only price and long projects lower its balanced score in this index.
Pricing models and 2026 cost ranges

AI agent readiness: UCP and ACP support
AI shopping agents now search, compare and buy on behalf of people and companies. Two open protocols connect agents to stores. Google, Shopify and retail partners announced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) on 11 January 2026. OpenAI and Stripe run the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). To learn the basics, read what agentic commerce is.
| Platform | UCP | ACP | Status on 25 September 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Plus | Co-developer of UCP | Yes, through Stripe | Live and documented |
| Salesforce Commerce Cloud | UCP integration guide in B2C Commerce developer documentation | No public documentation found | Documented for UCP |
| BigCommerce Enterprise | Rollout in progress | Documented, through Stripe | Partly live |
| commercetools | Merchant guide to UCP published | Through the Stripe Agentic Commerce Suite | Build work necessary |
| Adobe Commerce | Support committed in February 2026 | Support committed in February 2026 | Not yet in the platform core |
| SAP Commerce Cloud, Shopware, Optimizely, VTEX, OroCommerce, Spryker | No public evidence found | No public evidence found | Custom build possible |
| Medusa.js | No native support | No native support | Your team can build endpoints in the open-source code |
What this means for buyers: Ask each vendor for dated documentation. A roadmap slide is not documentation. Elogic Commerce updates this table every quarter. To learn how AI agents pay for orders, read agentic payments.
Platform profiles
1. Shopify Plus (balanced 83, complex B2B 79)
Best for: brands that want a fast launch, D2C and B2B on one platform, and early reach into AI shopping agents.
Strengths: Shopify publishes the entry price (2,300 USD per month on a 3-year term). Shopify Plus includes native B2B: company profiles, catalogs, payment terms and quantity rules. Shopify co-developed UCP and supports ACP through Stripe. The app and partner ecosystem is the largest in this index. In Q2 2026, Shopify reported 115.6 billion USD of GMV, up 32%, and B2B GMV up 76%. Shopify also reported that AI-driven traffic and orders to Shopify stores tripled year over year. Read our Shopify Plus guide.
Limits: Complex B2B logic, such as multi-level approvals and ERP-driven price rules, often needs apps or custom work. High-volume merchants move to a variable platform fee that Shopify does not publish.
Do not choose if: your quote-to-order process and your ERP pricing logic must run inside the commerce platform.
2. Adobe Commerce (balanced 79, complex B2B 84)
Best for: manufacturers and distributors with complex catalogs, account hierarchies and heavy ERP integration.
Strengths: The native B2B module includes company accounts, shared catalogs, quotes, requisition lists and purchase approvals. You can deploy self-managed, on Adobe Commerce on Cloud (PaaS) or on Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service (SaaS). The partner and developer ecosystem is the largest for complex B2B. Gartner named Adobe a Leader for the ninth consecutive year in 2025. Version 2.4.9 became available on 12 May 2026. Standard support for 2.4.9 continues to 31 May 2029. Read What is Magento.
Limits: The license is quote-based and tied to GMV. Upgrades and monthly security patches need a disciplined team. UCP and ACP support is committed but not yet in the platform core.
Do not choose if: you have no team to run upgrades. From 1 June 2027, Adobe will suspend traffic on Cloud environments that run unsupported versions. Track dates in our Adobe Commerce and Magento version tracker.
Team capacity: Elogic Commerce is Adobe Commerce Silver Solution Partner. See our Magento development services or hire Magento developers.
3. BigCommerce Enterprise (balanced 77, complex B2B 77)
Best for: mid-market and enterprise brands that want SaaS operations, open APIs and B2B features.
Strengths: SaaS operations remove upgrade projects. B2B Edition adds company accounts, quotes and a buyer portal. BigCommerce documents ACP support through Stripe. UCP support is in rollout. In July 2025, the parent company became Commerce.com, Inc. (Nasdaq: CMRC). It groups BigCommerce, Feedonomics (product feeds for marketplaces and AI channels) and Makeswift (visual editor). Read What is BigCommerce.
Limits: Enterprise prices are custom. The partner ecosystem is smaller than the Shopify or Adobe ecosystems. ERP-driven pricing can need middleware.
Do not choose if: you need self-managed hosting or full source-code control.
4. Salesforce Commerce Cloud (balanced 70, complex B2B 72)
Best for: enterprises that run Salesforce CRM, Service Cloud and Agentforce and want one customer data model.
Strengths: One vendor supplies B2B Commerce, B2C Commerce, CRM and service tools. Salesforce publishes a UCP integration guide for B2C Commerce. Agentforce adds AI agents for merchants and shoppers. Salesforce now markets Commerce Cloud as Agentforce Commerce. Gartner named Salesforce a Leader for the tenth consecutive year in 2025. Read What is Salesforce Commerce Cloud and What is Agentforce.
Limits: The price grows with revenue. The Premier Success plan adds 30% to the net license fee. Third-party estimates put implementation at 200,000 USD or more.
Do not choose if: your margins are thin and your GMV grows fast. The GMV fee grows with every sale.
5. commercetools (balanced 69, complex B2B 70)
Best for: enterprises with strong in-house engineering that want a composable (MACH) architecture.
Strengths: API-first, headless and cloud-native. The data model is flexible for many brands and regions. commercetools publishes a merchant guide to UCP and joins ACP through the Stripe Agentic Commerce Suite. Gartner named commercetools a Leader for the sixth consecutive year in 2025 and noted its MCP and AI Hub tools for AI agents.
Limits: Your team builds the storefront and many features. Time to launch is long. Total cost includes front-end hosting and a larger engineering team.
Do not choose if: you need a working B2B portal in less than 6 months without senior engineers.
6. Shopware (balanced 68, complex B2B 71)
Best for: European and DACH mid-market merchants with B2B and B2C channels.
Strengths: Shopware shows entry prices for each edition. The Evolve edition includes B2B Components. Shopware is a market leader among shop systems in Germany, according to the EHI study “E-Commerce-Markt Deutschland 2025”. See our Shopware development services.
Limits: Customer-specific pricing needs the Beyond edition. The free Community Edition is for merchants under 1 million EUR GMV. We found no public UCP or ACP evidence.
Do not choose if: most of your markets and partners are outside Europe.
7. OroCommerce (balanced 68, complex B2B 74)
Best for: B2B distributors and manufacturers that want B2B-native features and an open-source option.
Strengths: Oro built the platform for B2B: many price lists, quotes, workflows and corporate accounts. The Community Edition is open source. A CRM is included.
Limits: The developer ecosystem is small. We found no public UCP or ACP evidence.
Do not choose if: B2C volume is your main revenue line.
8. Medusa.js (balanced 65, complex B2B 62)
Best for: engineering-led companies that want an open-source, composable commerce engine and full code control.
Strengths: The MIT license has no fee. The modular Node.js architecture lets your team add MCP or ACP endpoints.
Limits: You own hosting, security and feature development. B2B features need development work. The partner ecosystem is small.
Do not choose if: you do not have a senior JavaScript team or a delivery partner.
9. Optimizely Configured Commerce (balanced 64, complex B2B 71)
Best for: B2B manufacturers and distributors that want B2B-native commerce and content management from one vendor.
Strengths: B2B-first features include account hierarchies, customer-specific pricing and punchout. Optimizely adds CMS and experimentation tools.
Limits: Prices are quote-based. The ecosystem is small. We found no public UCP or ACP evidence.
Do not choose if: you need a large pool of platform developers in many countries.
10. Spryker (balanced 63, complex B2B 65)
Best for: enterprise B2B marketplaces and complex composable builds.
Strengths: Modular architecture, marketplace features and B2B features.
Limits: Prices are quote-based. Projects need strong engineering and a long timeline. We found no public UCP or ACP evidence.
Do not choose if: you need a fast launch with a small team.
11. SAP Commerce Cloud (balanced 61, complex B2B 69)
Best for: large manufacturers that run SAP S/4HANA and want commerce inside the SAP landscape.
Strengths: Deep B2B features and deep SAP ERP integration for complex prices, product configuration and multi-organization structures. Gartner lists SAP Commerce Cloud as a Leader in 2025 and notes its B2B strength and a new B2B self-service portal.
Limits: High total cost and long projects. We found no public UCP or ACP evidence.
Do not choose if: you do not run SAP ERP.
12. VTEX (balanced 59, complex B2B 59)
Best for: multi-brand retailers and marketplaces, with the strongest presence in Latin America.
Strengths: SaaS operations with native marketplace and order management features. Gartner named VTEX a Challenger in 2025.
Limits: B2B depth is less than on B2B-native platforms. Prices are quote-based. We found no public UCP or ACP evidence.
Do not choose if: complex B2B manufacturing is your core business.

How to choose an enterprise ecommerce platform: 7 steps
- Write down your B2B requirements. Include account hierarchies, price lists, quotes, approvals and punchout.
- Map your integrations. List ERP, PIM, CRM, OMS, tax and payment systems. Count the order and price data flows.
- Calculate the 3-year total cost. Add license, implementation, hosting, apps, support and your internal team.
- Check AI agent readiness. Ask each vendor for dated documentation of UCP, ACP or MCP support.
- Check the upgrade and support model. For self-managed platforms, get the end-of-support date for each version.
- Test with your own data. Run a proof of concept with your largest catalog and your most complex price rule.
- Check partner capacity. Ask for certified developers, B2B case studies and support SLAs.
To run the selection as a formal process, use our B2B ecommerce RFP guide and the B2B ecommerce RFP template. To compare B2B features in more detail, use our B2B ecommerce platform comparison.
