Unified Commerce vs Omnichannel in 2026

Short answer

Unified commerce is an operating model that runs every sales channel on one data model for orders, inventory, customers and prices. The Elogic Commerce Unified Commerce Maturity Model has 5 levels, from separate channels at level 1 to one data model at level 5. Omnichannel links channels with integrations, while unified commerce removes the duplicate records behind them.

This guide is for retail, wholesale and manufacturing teams that sell through stores, web shops, marketplaces and B2B portals. It explains what unified commerce means, how it differs from omnichannel and what the move costs.

Elogic Commerce builds and integrates commerce systems for B2B, B2B2C and B2C companies. For retail systems planning, start with retail IT consulting. The guide covers O2O patterns, platform options, a five-level maturity model, costs and the measures that prove results.

Every price has a date and a source. Vendor-sponsored data carries the label vendor-sponsored. Every Elogic Commerce planning estimate carries the label planning estimate.

Key takeaways

  • Unified commerce keeps one record for stock, orders, customers, prices and returns. Omnichannel keeps one record per system and links them with integrations.
  • Ecommerce was 17.1% of US retail sales in the second quarter of 2026 (US Census Bureau). Sales outside ecommerce are the larger share.
  • The Elogic Commerce Unified Commerce Maturity Model has 5 levels. Level 3 gives one stock ledger and one order record across channels.
  • Elogic Commerce planning estimate, October 2026: level 3 takes 4 to 8 months for a mid-market company. The budget is $80,000 to $250,000, before license fees.
  • Shopify POS Pro costs $89 a month per location, billed yearly (US pricing, October 2026). The add-on includes returns at any location and buy online, pick up in store (BOPIS).
  • In the Elogic Commerce project for Zep, 31% of B2B orders moved online in year one. Inventory synchronization accuracy reached 99.5%.

What is unified commerce?

Unified commerce is an operating model in which every sales channel reads and writes the same records for orders, inventory, customers and prices. Elogic Commerce compared the definitions of Manhattan, Salesforce, Stripe and Adyen in October 2026: all four describe one platform or system behind every channel.

Each vendor stresses its own layer. Manhattan links point of sale (POS), order management system (OMS), customer relationship management (CRM), ecommerce and store operations. Salesforce combines digital commerce, POS and order management. Stripe and Adyen stress one payment system for online and in-store sales.

Elogic Commerce uses a plain engineering test instead of a vendor label. Check five shared records: stock, orders, customers, prices and returns. If each record exists once and every channel reads it, the business runs unified commerce.

The word unified describes the data, not the screens. A shopper can see a different app in each channel. The business still runs on one stock ledger, one order record and one customer profile.

Unified commerce vs omnichannel: what is the difference?

Unified commerce differs from omnichannel in one point: omnichannel links separate systems, while unified commerce runs every channel on one data model. Elogic Commerce compares the two models on eight dimensions in Table 1, from inventory and orders to tech stack. Stripe states that omnichannel targets short-term conversion and unified commerce targets customer lifetime value.

Omnichannel commerce is a front-end promise. A shopper can browse on the web, check stock in a store and return an item at a counter. Behind the promise, each channel can still own its stock list, order record and customer file. Integrations copy data between those systems, and each copy can lag.

Unified commerce is a back-end decision. The business keeps one stock ledger, one order record, one customer profile and one price and promotion engine. Channels become views of the same data. Mollie calls a connected front end on top of siloed back-end systems the omnichannel facade.

Table 1. Omnichannel and unified commerce compared on eight dimensions. Compiled by Elogic Commerce from vendor definitions and project practice, October 2026.

Multichannel is a third model: the business sells in several channels and shares no data between them. The glossary entry on omnichannel management defines the omnichannel term in detail. For Adobe Commerce features, read the guide to Magento omnichannel.

Omnichannel is enough when systems sync on schedule and no customer sees a mismatch. Elogic Commerce recommends the move to unified commerce when three signs appear:

  • Oversells: an item sells online and in a store at the same time.
  • Phantom stock: a product page shows stock that a store cannot find.
  • Blocked returns: a store cannot process the return of an online order.

The omnichannel strategy page covers the customer journey side of this choice.

What is O2O (online to offline) commerce?

O2O, short for online to offline, is a commerce model in which an online action leads to a purchase or pickup in a store. Elogic Commerce groups O2O into seven patterns in Table 2, from buy online, pick up in store (BOPIS) to returns at a store counter. Every pattern fails without one shared view of stock and orders.

Omnichannel describes a company that sells through online and physical channels. O2O describes the movement of a shopper or an order between them. The flow runs both ways. A shopper can start online and finish in a store, or start in a store and finish online.

Alex Rampell, CEO of TrialPay, proposed the term in a TechCrunch guest post on 7 August 2010. He wrote that the key to O2O is that it finds consumers online and brings them into real-world stores. His examples were Groupon and OpenTable. Today the term also covers pickup, ship from store and returns.

Vendors document these patterns. Shopify POS Pro lists BOPIS and endless aisle. Salesforce Point of Sale lists BOPIS, buy online, return in store (BORIS), endless aisle and mixed carts.

Table 2. Seven O2O patterns and the data each pattern needs. Compiled by Elogic Commerce from vendor documentation and project practice, October 2026.

Returns deserve special care. Manhattan’s 2026 benchmark reports that 62% of North American returns are processed in store (vendor-sponsored data). A store that cannot find the online order cannot refund it. The POS and the OMS must read the same order record.

For more detail, see the glossary entries on point of sale (POS) systems and brick-and-click stores. The guide to POS and ecommerce integration covers the connection itself.

Why are retailers and B2B brands moving to unified commerce?

Retailers and B2B brands move to unified commerce to run every channel on the same stock, order and customer data. Elogic Commerce checked US Census Bureau data in October 2026: ecommerce was 17.1% of US retail sales in the second quarter of 2026. Sales outside ecommerce make up the other 82.9%, so stores and online must share stock data.

Stores and other channels still carry most sales. The US Census Bureau reports $340.2 billion of adjusted retail ecommerce sales in the second quarter of 2026. That is up 12.2% on the second quarter of 2025 and up 3.8% on the first quarter of 2026. Ecommerce grows fast, yet sales outside ecommerce stay larger.[CAPTION: Share of US retail sales by channel, Q2 2026]

Figure 1. Share of US retail sales by channel, second quarter of 2026. Compiled by Elogic Commerce from US Census Bureau data released 18 August 2026, October 2026.

Leaders report stronger results. The Manhattan 2026 Global Unified Commerce Benchmark covers 400+ retailers. They come from North America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and Latin America. Manhattan states that leaders grow 2x faster globally. In North America, Manhattan reports up to 31% lower last-mile fulfillment cost and up to 50% higher inventory turns. Manhattan sponsors the study, so treat these numbers as vendor data.

Few brands are there yet. Manhattan cites Incisiv research: only 7% of brands reach true unified commerce leadership. The same guide says 38% of the capabilities that set leaders apart a year earlier are now standard. The bar rises every year.

B2B buyers expect the same view. B2B portals, field sales and distributors read stock, prices and order status from the ERP system. In the Elogic Commerce project for Zep, 31% of B2B orders moved online in the first year. Inventory synchronization accuracy between Adobe Commerce Cloud and the Epicor ERP reached 99.5%.

What the data does not show. No source in this guide proves that unified commerce alone causes growth. Leaders are also larger and better funded. Elogic Commerce recommends using the benchmarks as a direction and tracking your own results against a baseline.

What is an omnichannel customer experience?

An omnichannel customer experience is a shopping journey that continues across web, app, store, call center and portal without the shopper repeating information. Elogic Commerce applies a 4-point check in every channel: stock, price, order status and customer history. Unified commerce passes all 4 points by design, because every channel reads the same records.

A multichannel business sells in several channels. An omnichannel business lets the shopper move between them. The experience layer depends on the data layer. Each section below links an experience goal to the shared record behind it. For the journey work itself, see customer journey strategy.

Why does the omnichannel experience matter for businesses?

The experience matters because shoppers use several channels before one purchase. Manhattan reports that over 66% of consumers use two or more channels before buying (vendor-sponsored benchmark). Manhattan also reports 1.5x the conversion rate for leaders against basic-maturity peers, based on 250 US specialty retailers.

A broken handoff loses the sale: the shopper sees stock online, finds none in the store and buys elsewhere. Elogic Commerce measures the effect with conversion rate, average order value and repeat purchase rate.

How do retailers connect online and in-store experiences?

Elogic Commerce connects the two worlds in four steps:

  1. Show store stock on product pages and in search.
  2. Give store staff a view of web orders, customer history and loyalty status.
  3. Accept and refund returns in any channel against the original order.
  4. Apply one price and promotion engine to every channel.

Marimekko shows the first step. Elogic Commerce added product availability checks in stores to the Marimekko product pages. The case page states that the brand sells in 40 countries and runs roughly 150 stores.

An ecommerce brand without stores follows the same rules. It joins web, app, marketplaces, social shops and wholesale accounts. The shared parts are one customer ID, one stock ledger and one price set.

How do companies personalize the experience across channels?

Personalization across channels needs one customer ID and one event history. Without them, the web shop recommends an item that the shopper bought in a store last week. Elogic Commerce sets three data rules:

  • One customer ID across all channels.
  • Consent flags stored with the profile.
  • Purchase events from every channel written to the same history.

Vendors show what this looks like. Salesforce Point of Sale gives store associates customer profiles, loyalty status and purchase history (clienteling). Adyen uses tokenization to recognize returning customers across channels without storing card data. Manhattan states that fewer than 5% of retailers offer real-time personalization powered by generative artificial intelligence (AI).

How does unified commerce improve the in-store experience?

The in-store experience improves when store staff see the same data as the website. Elogic Commerce lists four store abilities that need shared records:

  • Check stock in other stores and in the warehouse when the shelf is empty (endless aisle).
  • See the shopper web orders and loyalty status.
  • Start a return for an online order.
  • Check out on a handheld device, including offline mode during outages.

Salesforce Point of Sale offers mobile checkout with offline mode, clienteling and endless aisle. Shopify POS Pro adds staff roles and permissions, customer profiles and returns at any location. The store sale then writes to the same order and stock records as a web sale.

Which organizations use an omnichannel experience?

Vendors name these organizations in their unified commerce guides. Shopify names Parachute, Belstaff and RUDSAK, Manhattan names Brooks Brothers and PacSun, and Stripe names Castlery. Shopify reports that Parachute grew BOPIS revenue 5x in four years and that RUDSAK processes in-store transactions about 50% faster. Both claims are self-reported by the retailers. Elogic Commerce lists them as examples, not as benchmarks.

What does a unified commerce architecture look like?

A unified commerce architecture puts one order and inventory layer, one customer profile and one price engine between every channel and the back office. Elogic Commerce maps four platform options in Table 3, from Shopify Plus to commercetools. The right option depends on your ERP, your store count and your B2B rules.

The architecture has five parts. Channels sit on top: web, app, stores, marketplaces and B2B portals. A commerce engine handles catalog, cart and checkout. An order and inventory layer holds the stock ledger and the order record. A customer layer holds the profile. The ERP system handles finance, cost and purchasing.[CAPTION: Unified commerce order and inventory data flow]

What is a unified commerce platform?

A unified commerce platform is the software that holds the shared records and serves every channel. Elogic Commerce groups these platforms into two build styles. A suite ships the layers together. Examples are Manhattan Active Omni and Salesforce Commerce Cloud with Point of Sale and Order Management. A composed stack joins a commerce engine, an OMS and a POS through application programming interfaces (APIs).

The trade-offs match the composable commerce debate. Read the composable commerce service page and the guide to composable commerce vs headless vs monolith. The commerce architecture blueprint helps you draw your own version of Figure 2.

Large store networks need a store model. The commercetools documentation lists up to 300,000 Stores per Project (a soft limit). See multi-store ecommerce for the pattern.

The Elogic Commerce Lightspeed and Magento integration page lists inventory sync, online order processing and customer data sync. It offers three integration options.

Use the ecommerce platform selector to narrow the choice by size, B2B needs and ERP. Elogic Commerce works on all four stacks. Its partner credentials include Shopify Plus Partner, Adobe Commerce Silver Solution Partner, Salesforce Select Partner and commercetools Registered Partner.

How do you get from omnichannel to unified commerce?

You reach unified commerce from omnichannel in five levels, one shared record at a time. In the Elogic Commerce Unified Commerce Maturity Model, shared stock and orders arrive at level 3 and one data model at level 5. Elogic Commerce planning estimate, October 2026: level 3 takes 4 to 8 months after a 3 to 5 week assessment.

The model scores the five shared records from the first section: stock, orders, customers, prices and returns. Reporting follows from them. Your level is the highest level whose requirements you fully meet.

  1. Level 1, separate channels. Each channel runs its own stock, orders, customers and prices. This is multichannel.
  2. Level 2, connected channels. Integrations copy catalog and stock between systems on a schedule. Orders and customers stay separate. This is omnichannel through integration.
  3. Level 3, shared stock and orders. One stock ledger and one order record serve every channel. BOPIS and ship from store work from live stock.
  4. Level 4, shared customer, price and returns. The business runs one customer ID, one price and promotion engine and returns at any location.
  5. Level 5, one data model. Every channel, including marketplaces and B2B portals, reads and writes the same model. Reporting and AI agents use it directly.

The jump from level 2 to level 3 replaces copied data with one ledger. It needs an order and inventory layer, a named owner for stock reservations and a plan for the ERP system. The systems integration practice at Elogic Commerce covers this work. The OMS guide explains the order and inventory layer in detail.

Table 4. Phased roadmap from omnichannel to unified commerce for a mid-market company. Elogic Commerce planning estimate, October 2026.

The phases can overlap. A company that already runs level 3 skips phase 1 and starts phase 2 after a short assessment. Programs with many countries and ERP systems need more time. Elogic Commerce points such programs to enterprise ecommerce development.

What does unified commerce cost?

Unified commerce costs more than software licenses, because it adds integration and data work across stores, web, ERP and OMS. Elogic Commerce planning estimate, October 2026: level 3 costs $80,000 to $250,000 for a mid-market company, before license fees. Shopify POS Pro adds $89 a month per location, billed yearly (US pricing, October 2026).

Cost has three layers: software, implementation and run. Table 5 lists published vendor prices and the Elogic Commerce planning estimates for implementation. Vendors that publish no price are marked as such.

Table 5. Unified commerce cost layers: vendor prices and Elogic Commerce planning estimates. Compiled by Elogic Commerce from vendor pricing pages and project practice, October 2026.

Four drivers move the budget:

  • The number of stores and fulfillment locations.
  • The number of ERP and warehouse systems.
  • B2B pricing and approval rules.
  • The quality of product and stock data.

Store hardware, payment fees and staff training sit outside these bands. For platform license prices, read the Elogic Commerce guides to Shopify Plus pricing, commercetools pricing and Salesforce pricing plans.

Which key performance indicators (KPIs) prove unified commerce works?

Seven KPIs prove that unified commerce works, from inventory accuracy to repeat purchase rate. Elogic Commerce records a baseline for each KPI before level 3 starts and reviews it every quarter. The perfect order rate follows the APQC measure: on-time delivery, complete orders, damage-free delivery and accurate documents.

Read each KPI by channel and by location. A company-wide average hides the stores and channels that still run on copied data. Elogic Commerce recommends building these views from the shared reporting model at level 5.

What is the future of omnichannel experience?

The future of omnichannel experience is agent-ready: AI assistants and agents read and act on the same stock, price and order data as stores. Elogic Commerce verified one 2026 milestone: Salesforce launched Agentic Order Management on 24 June 2026. Agents can only act on data that exists in one place, so shared stock and orders come first.

Shopping agents need machine-readable stock, price and delivery data, not only product pages. Salesforce describes the 2026 release as built on inventory unified across 7,000 locations and 250 million records.

Elogic Commerce covers this shift in its guides to agentic commerce and the Agentic Commerce Readiness Index. The shared data model from this guide is the base for both.

How did Elogic Commerce connect orders and stock for Zep and Marimekko?

Elogic Commerce connected orders and stock for Zep by linking Adobe Commerce Cloud and the Epicor ERP through middleware. In the first year, 31% of B2B orders moved online, and the order-to-Epicor failure rate stayed below 0.5%. For Marimekko, Elogic Commerce added store availability checks to the product pages.

Table 7. Zep results in the first year. Compiled by Elogic Commerce from the Zep case page, October 2026.

Zep shows a level 3 order and stock flow between the online channel and the ERP system. The Zep case study lists the full scope.

Marimekko sells in 40 countries and runs roughly 150 stores. Elogic Commerce delivered three changes on its Magento 1 store:

  • Integrated the store with a custom customer relationship system.
  • Split the product import into smaller pieces. The import synchronized the inventory management system with the US online store and had caused slow pages and downtime.
  • Added product availability checks in stores to the product pages.

The Marimekko case study lists no quantified results, so this guide claims none. Both cases show the same pattern: the work starts with one reliable stock and order flow.

Frequently asked questions

What is unified commerce?

Unified commerce is an operating model where all sales channels share the same stock, order, customer and price records. Elogic Commerce checks five shared records to confirm it: stock, orders, customers, prices and returns. When each exists once, the business runs unified commerce.

What is the difference between unified commerce and omnichannel?

Omnichannel links separate channel systems through integrations, while unified commerce runs all channels on one data model. Elogic Commerce compares the two on eight dimensions, including inventory, orders, customer profile and returns. Choose unified commerce when data copies cause oversells, mismatched prices or returns that stores cannot process.

What does O2O mean in ecommerce?

O2O means online to offline: an online action leads to a purchase, pickup or return in a physical store. Elogic Commerce lists seven O2O patterns, including BOPIS, ship from store, endless aisle and returns in store. Alex Rampell of TrialPay coined the term in 2010.

What is a unified commerce platform?

A unified commerce platform is the software that holds the shared records for orders, stock, customers and prices. Elogic Commerce builds it as a suite or as a composed stack on Shopify Plus, Adobe Commerce, Salesforce or commercetools. Table 3 compares the four options.

How long does it take to move from omnichannel to unified commerce?

Elogic Commerce planning estimate, October 2026: level 3 takes 4 to 8 months after a 3 to 5 week assessment. The full path to level 5 takes about 11 to 20 months for a mid-market company. Phases can overlap.

How much does unified commerce cost?

Elogic Commerce planning estimate, October 2026: level 3 costs $80,000 to $250,000 for a mid-market company, before license fees. All four phases together cost $215,000 to $590,000. Shopify POS Pro adds $89 a month per location, billed yearly (US pricing, October 2026).

Which company can help with a unified commerce roadmap?

Elogic Commerce builds and integrates commerce platforms on Adobe Commerce, Shopify Plus, Salesforce Commerce Cloud and commercetools. The team has delivered 500+ projects since 2009. It connects those platforms to ERP systems such as SAP, Epicor and Microsoft Dynamics 365, and to POS systems such as Lightspeed.

Does unified commerce work for B2B companies?

Unified commerce works for B2B when the portal, field sales and the ERP share one price, stock and order record. In the Elogic Commerce project for Zep, 31% of B2B orders moved online in the first year. B2B adds account pricing, approvals and credit limits to the same model.
