Magento SEO tips and tricks

06 August 2015

Magento is a very powerful e-commerce platform, which is used by a huge number of popular brands in a variety of niches. However, there are a number of problems faced by large and small online shops. One of the most common problems Magento is performance and speed – the result of its unwieldiness and complexity. But there are a number of solutions that can help solve these problems.

Here is the list of tips that will help you to make your store more visible in google:

Problems of Magento, associated with automatic redirects

Non-unique URL with numbers

Quite a common problem for Magento – URL addresses are added to the number (-1, -2, etc.). It occurs if the site has a page with the exact same URL, but with a different product, or just use the URL in the site previously.

By default Magento adds the number to the URL and sets it to redirect the old page.

To solve this problem, you must remove redirection, set by the platform. If you have a large number of pages – we recommend to solve the problem together with the developer. Remember that if you remove wrong redirects – it can lead to serious problems such as getting unwanted pages into the index, and as a consequence – loss of pages and traffic.

Duplicate pages (subfolder / catalog /)

If you are using an earlier version of Magento, or changed the settings several times forming a URL, you can run the standard Magento URL, which look like this:

Also, this problem could occur if you removed grouped redirects (or some specific rules), which could change your current «clean» URL redirects without installation from a previous version.

A large number of goods from / catalog / in the URL is often available on the site along with products with short URL. In recent versions, the long URL is being used by default. In order to check for the problem on the site, simply use these two commands:

Site:domain.com inurl:catalog

The search results will show all pages of the site URL, which contains the folder / catalog /.

The problem described above can generate more than 1,000 commodity duplicate pages on your site that will be indexed. To solve this problem you have to set up “canonical” tags.

Pagination, sorting, filtering, and limiting

It’s all very simple – do not forget to register in the robots.txt rules “Disallow:” a collation and limitation.

In order to solve the problem of pagination simply help the robot to understand that a certain array of pages of a linked sequence. To do this – use the rel = “next” and rel = “prev”

In addition, as with the product page, it is recommended to set up canonical tags for all pages filtering (dynamic) to higher-level pages (category or subcategory).

Internal and external duplicates

Magento shops usually suffer from internal and external duplicate of content because many products have similar descriptions. To eliminate internal duplicates meta robots tag is typically used,  because it helps to remove  duplicates from the index of the search engine.

If you want to resolve this issue on a large online store, it is more appropriate to use robots.txt to save the crawl budget.

Another solution would be to use the canonical tags , but they won’t always solve the problem: you may need a lot of time to re-index the site by the search robot completely.

Of course, the best solution is the unique writing optimized content to all product pages. However, very often it may not be a trivial time and money.

Absence of static landing pages

In large e-commerce stores there are plenty of pages of the catalog that could be optimized and used for the purpose of increasing search traffic.

High-Quality, optimized content written on each landing page can improve the position of your site in search results, and hence traffic, sales and profits.

Summing up everything written above, Magento is a great customizable platform in terms of SEO technical aspects, and a wide range of add-ons and extensions that can help you to solve many problems quickly. But, nevertheless, such a powerful platform requires advanced knowledge of web programming to implement complex integrated solutions for large online stores.
