Ecommerce architecture is the technical structure that defines how a commerce platform, storefront, services, data, integrations, and infrastructure work together. Good architecture aligns business requirements with scalability, reliability, security, performance, and maintainability.
It defines which systems own products, pricing, inventory, customers, orders, content, and experience, and how those systems communicate. A simple store may keep most capabilities inside one platform; a complex enterprise setup can include storefronts, commerce engines, ERP, PIM, OMS, CRM, search, CMS, payment, data, and integration layers.
Key ecommerce architecture decisions include:
• System-of-record ownership for each business data domain.
• Synchronous APIs, asynchronous events, batch jobs, and other integration patterns.
• Monolithic, headless, composable, or hybrid boundaries between experience and commerce services.
• Availability, scalability, security, observability, deployment, and disaster-recovery requirements.
Good architecture makes business change cheaper because teams know where logic belongs and how systems depend on one another. Poor architecture often shows up as duplicated pricing rules, fragile point-to-point integrations, slow releases, and failures that are difficult to trace. For B2B ecommerce, architecture is especially important because the storefront is usually only one part of a larger operational system.
Example: A B2B architecture might define ERP as the owner of price and stock, PIM as the owner of product content, commerce as the transaction layer, and an integration service as the connector between them.
