Platform Fit-Gap Analysis Explained

A platform fit-gap analysis compares business and technical requirements with a commerce platform’s native capabilities, extension options, and constraints. It identifies which needs fit out of the box, which require configuration or customization, and which create unacceptable gaps.

The analysis maps each important requirement to what the platform supports natively, what can be configured, what needs an extension or integration, and what requires custom development. It should cover both functional requirements and non-functional needs such as scale, security, performance, regional operation, and release model.

A fit-gap assessment commonly classifies requirements as:

• Native fit — supported by the platform with minimal configuration.

• Configurable or extensible fit — achievable through supported APIs, apps, or extension points.

• Custom gap — possible only through significant bespoke development or workaround.

• Hard gap — poorly aligned with the platform’s model or impractical at acceptable cost and risk.

The output is valuable because platform selection is rarely about feature checklists alone. Two platforms may both claim B2B support while differing greatly in how they handle pricing, account hierarchy, procurement, or ERP-driven workflows. A fit-gap analysis makes that implementation burden visible before the organization commits to a license and migration.

Example: A manufacturer can compare required account hierarchies, ERP-driven pricing, PunchOut, RFQ, and multi-region needs against each platform before deciding whether a missing capability is a tolerable extension or a strategic gap.
